The ability to feel welcomed and prepared for success in their new responsibilities is crucial for new hires. An essential part of the onboarding process is providing an employee handbook that defines the educational institute’s mission, vision, policies, and other important information regarding their teaching job employment. Your new employees will feel more empowered and have a clearer understanding of what is expected of them if you give them a well-written employee handbook on the first day. In this post, we shall describe employee handbooks and provide essential things to include during their creation.

What is a handbook for employees?

A set of instructions printed on paper or electronically is known as an employee handbook or employee manual. During the onboarding process, the school administrators should give the document to new hires to ensure that the company's mission, vision, requirements, and expectations are clearly stated. Keep in mind that the document should be available to all people and be simple to reference when deciding how to build and disseminate it.

You have the following formats to choose from when writing your manual for the handbook-

  • Slide presentation

This format makes it simple to deliver information to an audience in a style that is simple to consume. It is also easily shareable and introduces each piece of information in a single view.

  • Digital document

It's useful to refer back to an outline in an online or downloadable document. It is simpler to read than long paragraphs when they are formatted with indents, numbered lists, and other formatting.

  • Handbook in physical form

A little book or booklet might be a useful addition to a longer, more detailed digital resource. It can be beneficial to give staff something like this to keep at their workstations or homes as a constant reminder of the institute’s rules, regulations, vision, and values.

Information to put in an employee handbook

The material should be presented in a clear, succinct manner, with any crucial information being either highlighted or otherwise stressed. Although you should choose what information to include based on your institute’s rules, regulations, and onboarding procedure, the following is a list of topics frequently covered in employee handbooks at educational institutions-

  • Code of Ethics in Relation to Students

The well-being of the students must be the teacher's top priority and thus the instructor must devote all of their professional energy to helping each student reach their greatest potential. A code of ethics in relation to students must define everything that has to be done for the good of their students.

  • Responsibilities in relation to colleagues

When it comes to their coworkers, educators should keep the greatest norms of professional courtesy. The teachers should offer new teachers as much help as feasible. Where appropriate, the teacher should coordinate their lesson plans with their partner teacher to make sure there is a clear connection between the two sections of the class and that there is no repetition of material due to poor planning.

  • Lesson Preparation

Preparing a lesson plan for the delivery of lectures is very essential that teachers must understand thus it must be included in the handbook. Each teacher must take an interest in developing proper and adequate lesson plans for delivering lectures and by the end of each week, lesson plans must be prepared in advance and put in the proper folder.

  • Effective Classroom Style

In the teacher’s handbook, teachers must be made clear about the concept of effective classroom style. It includes making every effort to be as orderly and effective as possible. Demonstrating behaviour that a teacher is excited to teach the class and honors excellent work. Never display anger while dealing with students and be assertive and positive.

  • Allocating Homework

It is one of the essential things to include in the handbook so that the teachers develop a mindset for it. The purpose of homework is to reinforce the material covered in class. It should always be corrected and delivered on a frequent basis.

  • Dress Code

Each institute has its own notion of what constitutes proper clothing depending on the culture. If your institute has a rigorous dress code, be sure to specify what that entails. To earn the respect of their students and to reflect the dignity of their job, teachers should dress appropriately.

  • Leave Policy

This part includes information on notifying the school or college as soon as possible if a teacher misses class due to illness for any reason. Teachers must notify the school or college as soon as possible if they will be out of class for a number of days so that a replacement can be found.

  • Terms and Conditions

A clear and explicit presentation of factual information about the institute makes for the best employee handbook. The employee must go through the employment contract before signing it and understand the specific terms and circumstances of their employment.
