Job Description
Qualifications. The District Librarian Will Meet The Following Criteria
• Possess at least a bachelor’s degree in education from an accredited college
• At least one year of field experience (student teaching) or approved internship
• Possess a valid teaching certificate with a Library Media Specialist endorsement or proof of eligibility
• Experience with cataloging and managing a library automation system.
Line of Authority. The District Librarian will be directly responsible to the Director of Digital Learning & Strategy.
Performance Responsibilities. The District Librarian will work collaboratively with media
center assistants, teachers, administrators, students, and parents and have performance
Responsibilities In The Following Areas
Library Media Coordination
• Coordinate Media Center instruction, PreK-8.
• Determine learning outcomes, including those in information and media literacy, for all students in the school and/or District.
• Design and implement a variety of instructional strategies and experiences that engageeach student in successful learning.
• Support developing reading skills and encourage reading for both enjoyment and information.
• Provide knowledge of availability and suitability of information resources, curriculum, and professional resources to support curriculum initiatives and school improvement.
• Facilitate the use of presentation tools in print, technology, and media for dissemination efforts.
• Serve as an expert in organizing, synthesizing, and communicating information.
• Provide professional learning to library/media assistants on emerging library technologies and resources.
• Work collaboratively with district directors, district coordinators, building principals, teachers, and library/media assistants across the district to design and implement a library/media program consistent with building and district goals.
• Oversee the daily operation of the library/media centers including the use of staff and volunteers.
• Evaluate the library/media center program for continued improvement, with a focus on student learning.
• Model and observe media center lessons and providing actionable feedback to library/media assistants.
• Provide support to schools for Book Fairs and other special events related to the library/media centers.
• Coordinate programs with the public library, including but not limited to OneCard and summer reading programs.
Curricular & Instructional Support
• Integrate information and media literacy into all curriculum outcomes.
• Plan for a learning environment supportive of curriculum integration.
• Promote ethical use of information and technology through respect for intellectual property and compliance with appropriate laws and copyright guidelines.
• Provide professional learning opportunities to instructional staff, including educational support professionals, teachers, and administrators.
• Communicate with district academic leadership and school leadership.
• Participate in district curriculum and technology committees.
Library Management System
• Train school and district staff that may utilize the library inventory and checkout system.
• Manage the system administration of the library system, including inventory management, patron management, textbook management, circulation setup and maintenance, catalog setup and maintenance.
Library Media Policies & Procedures
• Create & maintain procedures including purchasing & receiving, discards, weeding, collection development (including integration of supporting curricular materials), requests for reconsideration, library agreements, and fees.
• Create and maintain a collection development process which includes record keeping, weeding, and current inventories of materials that align with District curriculum and support diverse learners.
• Supervise the media center budget allocation for budgeting and purchasing of library/media center resources.
• Seek out and apply for grants & additional funding sources in support of our school library/media centers.
• Propose revisions to district policies and procedures relevant to legislative action.
Other Duties. To perform such other tasks and assume such other responsibilities as the Director of Digital Learning & Strategy and the Superintendent may assign from time to time.
