Junior Specialist – Solid Waste Management, Trichy in Tiruchirappalli (Job Vacancy)

About the Project

IIHS is working with GIZ and Trichy Municipal Corporation to assist in operations of Micro Composting Centers (MCC) and integrating informal workers engaged in Solid Waste Management (SWM) in Trichy. The core of the proposed intervention involves strengthening MCC operations to ensure that Trichy’s entire biodegradable waste is efficiently managed, and to equip at least 20 informal workers engaged in SWM with enterprise-running skills in the SWM space.

Job Description

The junior SWM specialist will be part of the proposed project and will be responsible for contributing towards implementation of this project in Trichy. S/he will support governance, strategic and operational planning, management of resources (people, physical and financial), development and delivery of the project outcomes.

The core responsibility of this role will be to coordinate with the operations teams of composting centers, the Trichy City Corporation, and informal workers engaged in solid waste management. The incumbent will act as one of the primary links between the IIHS team and SWM stakeholders engaged on the ground in Trichy.

This is a contractual position for an initial term of 11 months, renewable on mutual consent.

Activities and Tasks

Responsibilities would include, but not be limited to, the following:

• Assisting the project management team in data collection, compilation, field work and other on-ground project activities related to Solid Waste Management (SWM);
• Supporting the effective implementation of project initiatives, adhering to established timelines and quality standards;
• Providing technical assistance to improve operations of Micro Composting Centers;
• Collection of waste samples, technical analysis, and offering expertise in composting methods, waste segregation, and compost quality control to ensure successful project outcomes;
• Identifying informal workers engaged in managing solid waste in Trichy;
• Collaborating with the stakeholders to enhance the efficiency and inclusivity of waste collection, transportation, and processing activities;
• Preparing detailed reports on the implementation status, highlighting achievements, challenges, and recommendations for improvement;
• Organizing and conducting capacity-building programs for different stakeholders on Solid Waste Management (SWM);
• Compiling comprehensive reports detailing the programs conducted, participants’ feedback, and outcomes achieved;
• Supporting the project implementation team in execution of other solid and liquid waste management projects;
• Providing support to other IIHS activities including academics, research, training, practice, operations and others;
• Participating in all activities of Institution-Building at IIHS; carrying out tasks as assigned by IIHS; and travelling on IIHS work as and when needed.

Structure and Reporting

The junior SWM specialist will be an External Consultant coordinating with the Project Manager at IIHS and will be required to collaborate with a diverse group of internal teams and external individuals/organizations.

Person Specification

The ideal candidate should have:

• A Bachelor’s/ Master’s degree in a field relevant to solid waste management;
• A total of 1 to 3 years of experience, ideally in solid waste management, environment or related development sector;
• Prior experience in agriculture, composting or solid waste management (preferred), or strong experience in project management;
• Experience of working in inter-disciplinary teams, preferably across practice implementation projects;
• Strong oral and written communication, analytical and numerical skills;
• A high level of organisational capability, including the ability to establish and maintain effective systems, procedures and processes and manage competing demands and deadlines without compromising quality;
• A high level of communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to consult and collaborate with inter-disciplinary and diverse teams, analyse and present information, and produce well researched high-quality reports;
• Effective working knowledge in Tamil and English.

This is a contractual position for an initial term of 11 months, renewable on mutual consent. This offer is on an exclusive basis, which implies that other professional assignments (whether compensated or not) that bear a potential conflict of interest with IIHS cannot be undertaken.

The search will remain open until the position is filled.

Location

This position is based in Trichy, Tamil Nadu and may entail travel to other locations in India.

Review and Assessment

The role and performance of the incumbent shall be subject to normal review and assessment systems at IIHS.
